Clinton Herald, April 30, 1864
John Chambers, a deck hand on the steamer, Savanna, and whose family resides in Clinton, was accidentally drowned at Muscatine on Friday night of last week. The boat was almost touching at the landing, near midnight, when Chambers, who was assisting in shoveling out the gang plank, made a misstep and fell between the boat and a barge alongside. This was the last seen of him. He leaves a wife and six children, the oldest but of twelve years of age, in destitute circumstances.
