Elizabeth Barbara (Huber) Hintermeister
4 February 1831-28 December 1903

Elizabeth Barbara Huber was born 4 February 1831 in Tuttlingen, Wurttemberg, Germany. Elizabeth's parents, Johann Jakob Huber (born 26 October 1800) and Maria Barbara Schneider (born 11 May 1802) were married 18 November 1823. To this marriage were born ten children, with Elizabeth being the seventh child. However, as was common during these times, many of the children did not live a long life. In fact, four of her siblings lived less than two years. Elizabeth and her brothers and sisters are listed in order of birth as follows:

Elizabeth's father worked as a tailor. However, the records show that Elizabeth's grandfather and great grandfather, both named Johann Jakob Huber, were farmers.

In 1844 Elizabeth was confirmed in the church at the age of 13. The same year on 27 June 1844, Elizabeth's mother died at the age of 42. Her father, Johann Jakob, then remarried on 14 September 1845 to Anna Maria Goetz.

On 14 June 1853 Elizabeth married Johannes (John) Hintermeister. Just eleven days later on 25 June 1853, Elizabeth's father died at the age of 52.

On 17 July 1854 Elizabeth and John Hintermeister had a baby girl named Maria Barbara. However, less than two weeks later, Maria died on 29 July 1854.

Sometime during the year 1854, John went to America, and settled in Muscatine, Iowa. He then sent for his wife the following year, and Elizabeth arrived at New York on 24 July 1855. She then traveled to Muscatine, arriving on 3 August 1855. When Elizabeth came to America, she made the trip with her youngest sister, Regina, who had just turned 14. It is believed that Regina lived with John and Elizabeth until she married in 1859.

According to the Tuttlingen Church Family Register , Elizabeth's brother, Friedrich Huber, also went to America in 1854, so it is speculated that John and Friedrich may have traveled to America together. Friedrich settled in Detroit, Michigan, where he married Julia (maiden name unknown), who was originally from Hanover, Germany.

After moving to Muscatine, John and Elizabeth had seven more children. Their children born in America are listed in order of birth as follows:

Elizabeth was an active member of the German Evangelical Church, and a member of the Women's Aid Society.

Elizabeth lived a long life. However, on the Monday afternoon of 28 December 1903, Elizabeth passed away at her home at 510 Main Street. Heart trouble was listed as the cause of death. She was 72 years old.

The German Evangelical Church records stated that at the time of Elizabeth's death, she had two sisters who survived her. These two sisters would have been Anna Maria and Regina. Her brother, Friedrich, who came to America, passed away on 27 September 1888.

Elizabeth is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine. Elizabeth's husband, John Hintermeister, survived her by a number of years. He died on 2 December 1919 at the old age of 92. He is buried next to Elizabeth in Greenwood Cemetery.

Elizabeth had two brothers and two sisters who survived to adulthood, they being Johann, Friedrich, Anna Maria, and Regina. Johann died at age 22 in Tuttlingen, and was not married. Brief biographies for Elizabeth's other three siblings follows:

Friedrich Huber (11 December 1834-27 September 1888)

Friedrich (Fred) Huber went to America in 1854, and settled in Detroit, Michigan. Since Fred's brother-in-law, John Hintermeister, also went to America in 1854, it is possible that they traveled together, but this could not be confirmed. The Wuerttenberg Emigration Index shows that in March 1854 Friedrich requested permission to emigrate from Wuerttemberg to America.

According to the Detroit City Directories, Fred worked as a tailor in a shop located at 38 1\2 Michigan Avenue. In 1864 Fred's home is listed as 167 Columbia East, however, starting in 1869 he was living at 55 Marion, where he lived the rest of his life.

Fred's wife, Julia (28 July 1840-11 December 1920), immigrated to the United States from Hanover, Germany in 1854. However, it is believed that Fred probably met her in Detroit, where they were married. Fred and Julia had four children, who are listed in order of birth as follows:

William A. Huber moved to Chicago sometime before 1890. He was married to Catherine (Kitty) McDonald, and worked as a butcher. Catherine was born in Wisconsin in approximately 1865. William and Catherine had eight children:

All of the children were born in Illinois except for Frank E., who was born in Michigan. From family history notes, we know that on 18 March 1911, William A. (Senior) was living at 1134 Blue Island Ave, and had a butcher shop at 33 S. Halsted St.

Elizabeth P. Huber married August J. Naumann (27 February 1864 - 14 July 1931) and had two sons, Harold W. Naumann (29 May 1889 - July 1967) and Clarence C. Naumann (4 July 1892 - 21 July 1966). This family line remained in the Detroit area.

Frederick L. Huber, Jr. Married Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) in 1892. Frederick died of consumption (tuberculosis) at the young age of 23 on 22 January 1893. Frederick worked as a saloon keeper. It is not believed that there were any children from this marriage.

Conrad H. Huber married Clara Preuschoff (13 August 1873 - 22 April 1920) on 15 August 1893. The couple had three children, Norman (13 February 1895 – 10 October 1979), Julia (28 June 1896 - unknown) and Frederick (14 July 1898 - March 1896). On 22 February 1900, Conrad died by a fall down a stairway at the Stroh Brewing Company, where he was employed as a driver. After Conrad’s death, Clara and the children moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. Clara remarried to Ebert (full name unknown).

Fred Huber died on 27 September 1888 at the age of 53. Julia died a number of years later on 11 December 1920 at the age of 83. Fred and Julia are buried in the Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit.

Anna Maria Huber (1 July 1838-8 April 1923)

Anna Maria Huber lived her entire life in Tuttlingen. She married Christian Kaufmann on 25 April 1861. Christian was born on 4 November 1835, and was also a resident of Tuttlingen. Anna Maria and Christian had seven children, who are listed in order of birth as follows:

Christian Kaufmann died on 12 November 1906 at age 71. Anna Maria survived her husband by a number of years. She died on 8 April 1923 at age 84.

Regina Huber (5 May 1841-9 January 1907)

Regina went to America at age 14 with her older sister, Elizabeth, and arrived at New York on 24 July 1855. She then went to Muscatine where she lived the rest of her life. She married John F. Heerd, (born 20 November 1829) on 21 December 1859 at the age of 18. John was an immigrant from Germany, coming to New York in 1848, and moving to Muscatine in 1855. John was a well known contracting painter in Muscatine. He was a widower and had one son, Frederick J. (1856-10 April 1929), by his first wife, Catharine Kell. After John married Regina they had five more children, they being:

John Heerd died of heart trouble on 22 January 1901 at the age of 71. Regina died on 9 January 1907 at the age of 65, and she is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
