C. H. Lane, of Red Oak, was born in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, in 1834. When about twenty years of age he went to Boston, where he was engaged in a wholesale grocery house until 1857, when he came to Iowa, and settled in Red Oak in the Fall of that year -- there not being as yet a single house on the town site. Two years later he opened the first store in the place, hauling his goods from Glenwood landing, a distance of forty miles, with teams.
With the exception of one year spent in the mountains of Colorado, Mr. Lane has been engaged in commercial business in Red Oak to the present time.
In December, 1873, the First National Bank of Red Oak was organized, and Mr. Lane was chosen president, which position he now holds.
