Samuel Vincent Shepard, 83, of Albia, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 1997 at Monroe Care Center in Albia. Services were held Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, the Rev. Ray Hampton officiating. Burial was in Oak View Cemetery in Albia.
He was born Sept. 15, 1914 in Albia, to Urban Vincent and Ida Jennings Shepard. He was a graduate of Eddyville High School class of 1932. He married Wilma Ruth Van Zante May 22, 1940 on her parent’s farm near Moravia. She died Jan. 9, 1960. He married Mildred Patton Taylor. He married Gwendolyn Lemaster Chance March 21, 1981 at the Independent Bible church in Bussey. He was a farmer all his life and an insurance agent for Wapello Mutual, Grinnell Mutual and Bankers Life Insurance companies. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County, a member of the former Evangelical United Brethren Church in Albia, a charter member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia, where he volunteered for church activities, a member of the CCC Camp in Wapello County during the 1930s, and a past member of the Monroe County Fair Board. He was an avid bowler.
He is survived by his wife, Gwendolyn; one son, Kenneth Shepard of Albia; four daughters, Elaine James and Delores Matthews, both of Newton, Martha Van Sickel of Moravia and Lela Griffin of West Des Moines; three step-sons, Steve Change of Lovilia, Dean Taylor of California and Gary Taylor of Salt Lake city, Utah; two step-daughters, Sharon Robb of Des Moines and Barbara Holz, of Ripley; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; two brothers, Bill Shepard of Marysville, Wash., Burton Shepard of Oak Harbor, Wash., and one sister, Eolis Long of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Wilma; one brother, Ben Shepard; and two sisters, Urada Tibbals and Ina Chapman.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Monroe county 4-H & FFA Fair.
Winfield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
