Elias H Stratton

My dad Elias H Stratton was born 1-17-1891 to Lyman H and Gertrude (Holliday) Stratton in a homesteader’s cabin belonging to his grandparents Elias and Zeziah (Wallace) Holliday, near the "Big Cut" northwest of Mapleton. Lyman was born in Little Rock, Ark in 1865 and Gertrude in Guthrie County, Iowa in 1870. Elias Holliday was born in 1833 and served with the 39th Iowa Infantry, Grand Army of the Republic.

My mother, Edna (Beaver) was born in 1893 near Climbing Hill, Iowa on her parent's farm. Her paw, Aaron Beaver, was born in 1862 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His family moved to Maquoketa, Iowa in 1863 and in 1882 he moved to Woodbury County. Her maw, Alminda (Winterringer) Beaver was born in 1858 near Tipton, Iowa. She was a school teacher.

My parents were married on 11-8-1911 at Onawa, Iowa. They farmed all their lives and raised 7 of their 8 children who are still living.

Marvin Elias lives in South Dakota. He had a twin Mervin Ellis who died at birth, Murial Valentine now Mrs. Ariel Uhl of Mapleton, Lorena Pearl now Mrs. Lloyd Miller of Fullerton, Nebraska, Cecil Hubert of Whiting, Ivan Sylvern of Holderge, Nebraska, Kenneth Aaron of Oto and myself, Maureta Ardel (Rita to a lot of people). I was born in 1930 on a farm northwest of Mapleton, which is now the Darrell O/Conner home. When I was 4 we moved to the Leonard Griffin farm northwest of Oto and I attended country school at Grant #7 from kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1945 we moved to my Mother’s home place near Climbing Hill. In 1948 I married Kenneth Kunkel son of Ralph and Irma (Hess) Kunkel of Oto. We had 2 children Peggy Lee 12-21-1948 and Sharon Jean 8-30-1950. Kenneth was killed in an auto accident in the spring of 1951. In 1953 I married Maurice E Regennitter of Washta, Iowa. We moved to Mapleton in 1954 and Edna Sue was born in the Dawson Maternity Home on 8th street on September 8 of that year. The next year Maurice Edwin Jr. was born on September 30. We then moved away and many moves and a divorce later the children and I returned to Mapleton in 1960 to be near my family.
