Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Burgess

Attorney A.W. Burgess had a heritage that he could be proud of his father. Walter Burgess of sturdy New England background, settled in Onawa soon after the town was platted: about 1866.

Albert was born August 4, 1871 at Onawa and died at his home in Onawa (one block north of Underhill's Law Office) on June 10, 1963 at age 91.

He was a graduate of the Onawa High School 1899 and later the University of Iowa Law School in 1896(that is the date in book) and for many years served as Justice of the Peace in Onawa until 1960, his office being a few doors south of the Democrat Office on Iowa Ave.

He was a member of the Congregational Church; 50 year member of the Vesper Lodge; A.F. and A.M.; Sioux City Consistory No. 5; Abu Beker Temple Shrine; the I.A.O.F; and Modern Woodman of America.

The Burgess Memorial Hospital was named in his memory in Onawa.

He was united in marriage to Helen A Allen on August 27, 1922 at Bartlet, South Dakota, Helen was the daughter of George W and Mary Allen, being born on July 13, 1884 near Harlan in Shelby County, Iowa and passed away December 6, 1950 at her home in Onawa. She received her education in the Logan High School and York College of York, Nebraska from which she graduated.

During her womanhood she taught school near Logan and Magnolia, coming to Onawa in 1911 to teach 1st grade in the Onawa Public Schools.

In 1915 she became City Librarian. a position she held until the middle 40's. Helen was known well throughout Monona County for the splendid effort she put forth in building up the public library system in the County.

When Iowa's "Who Who" was written and made into a book form, Mrs. Burgess was the one chosen from Monona County to write this county's history which the book contains.

Her Christian life was exemplified on all her doings socially and religiously. She was a faithful member of the Congregational Church of Onawa; also held memberships in the P.E.O. Studio Club, Eastern Star and several other societies and clubs.
