Sept 2, 1897M.J. Higgins died Sunday morning at 4 o’clock. This death removes from our midst one whom everybody loved and never referred to except to praise. Matthew Joseph Higgins was born in Wilmington, Delaware, May 24th, 1842. He was married to Miss Ester (sic) Rogers in Philadelphia July 30th 1873. They came to Malvern in 1880. To them was born 6 sons all of whom are living and at home except the second son who was in Minnesota at this time. The funeral services were held at the Catholic church Wednesday at 10 a.m. Father Currens of Red Oak officiating after which the remains were taken in charge by the G.A.R. and conveyed to the cemetery. Mr. H. Enlisted in the 5th Delaware infantry 1863 and served during the war. His brother, Edmund O. of Wilmington, Del., nephew Harry Fischler of Philadelphia and Mrs. Dr. Jeffries of Council Bluffs were in attendance.
