MarshalltownDorothy May (Jackson) Merkley was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 4, 1921. She passed away at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa on May 16, 2011. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday May 23, 2011, at Dunn's funeral home, with burial to follow in Glendale Cemetery. Dorothy grew up in Des Moines and Johnson County Kansas. She graduated from Roosevelt high school in 1939. She married Sam Merkley in May 1942, and they were together for 65 years before Sam's passing in 2008. Dorothy and Sam had three sons: Gary of Altoona; Robert (Ann) of Des Moines; and John (deceased). She is also survived by nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.
Dorothy worked as a City Parking Meter checker for 23 years, retiring in 1983. Following retirement, she and Sam spent a number of winters in Arizona. She was a member of First Christian Church in Des Moines, Elks Aux, enjoyed crafts, and played in the kitchen band at the Iowa VA.
She will be remembered in a number of ways yet gentle and resilient will be the words that come to many. Visitation will be held on Sunday May 22, 2011, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Dunn's funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be given to First Christian Church in Des Moines.
