Tomlin, Daniel Dies in Accident 1896

A tragedy occurred at Competine Bridge on the C. R. I. & P. Monday morning. A gang of bridge men have been at work for some time on the structure, changing it from wood to iron construction. Monday morning about 9:15 Tomlin was on top of the bridge prying a rail with a pinch bar. Suddenly the bar slipped and Tomlin, losing his balance, toppled headlong toward the ground. He struck his head on a timber, then fell sidewise upon another timber, finally falling to the ground. His fellow workmen lost no time in getting to him. He was of course unconscious and they at once put him on a hand car and brought him to the Central house where Drs. Wright and Brann attended him. They found the skull crushed, his side mashed, and other injuries which were fatal. The unfortunate man lingered in an unconscious condition until about noon when life departed.

Deceased was a single man, 36 years old, and resided with his parents in Iowa City. His remains were shipped there for burial.
