Page 5Funeral of Mrs. Syrena Hammond
The body of Mrs. Syrena A. Hammond, who died in Kansas City, Kan., Sunday evening, was brought to Emporia Wednesday morning on Santa Fe train number 13. Short services were held at the grave in Maplewood Cemetery Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Cecil Franklin, pastor of the First Christian church.
Mrs. Hammond was born in Indiana, March 2, 1840. Her early girlhood was spent in Illinois where she was married to L. J. Hammond, December, 1864. From Illinois, Mr. and Mrs. Hammond moved to Winterset, Iowa, where they lived until 1884 when they moved to Kansas. They settled on a farm 14 miles east of Emporia. Mr. Hammond died 24 years ago. Mrs. Hammond lived on the farm east of Emporia until 10 years ago when she went to Kansas City, Kan., where she lived with her son, Harry J. Hammond. Mrs. Hammond is survived by two sons, W. E. Hammond, of Lamar, Colo., and H. J. Hammond of Kansas City, Kan., six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
