Lola “Fern Cross-Bennett, daughter of Lewis Earl and Julia Viola (Butts) Bennett, was born November 5, 1919, in Promise City, Ia. She passed away Wednesday, May 28, 1997, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, of complications of cancer at the age of 77 years.
She was united in marriage to Floyd William Cross on November 15, 1941, in Unionville, Mo., and to this union seven children were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Roy LaVerne and Richard Bennett; a sister, Edna May; three grandchildren: Lora Orey, Daniel Brown and Tia DeVers.
She is survived by her children: Marilee Ackelson of Des Moines; Larry Cross of Waukee; Marva Cross-Gray of Sylacauga, Ala.; Jeannie Sickels of Des Moines; Lois Cross-Totten of Maryville, Mo.; Ronda Brown of Burlington Junction, Mo., and Julie Allen of Dexter, Mo.; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Eliza Chapman of Corydon; Austin Bennett of Promise City; Audrey Schultz of Des Moines, Ermal Bennett of Knoxville and Bernard Bennett of Chesapeake, Virg.
On November 30, 1971, she married Harry Ward Bennett who also preceded her in death. His sons are: George, Dale, Richard, Raymond, Kenny and Vernon Bennett and his daughters are Joy Bricker, Leona Henry, Connie Storms, Phylis Carter and Beverly Barry. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 31, 1997, at 1:30 p.m. from the Randolph Funeral Home, Corydon, with Pastor Dean Meyer officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery, DeSoto, Ia.
