Emory Dale Sample, 81, of Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center, died there Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, following a long illness. Emory was affectionately known by his friends and family as Sam.
Funeral Mass: 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call and visit Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home, where a vigil service will be held at 5 p.m. The Rev. Stephen Rosonke will officiate.
Survivors include his wife, Frankie; two sons, Dale Sample (Susan) of Bartlett, Ill. and Robert “Bob” Sample (Sue) of Mesa, Ariz.: two daughters, Jacqueline (Jackie) Thomas (Ron) of Iowa City and Theresa Nunez (Aldo) of Melbourne, Fla.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Aldo Nunez, Alex Nunez, Cammy and Matt Geren, Catherine Nunez, Daija Sample, Dana, Steve, Kylei, Kendall and Kailyn Wise, Jason, Wanda, Lucas and Olivia Miller, Jim, Elaine and Noah Watkins-Miller, Joe, Shelby, Jordan and Addison Sample, Julie, Jeff, Jens, Jonah and Jae Ann-Marie Dancer, Kenny and Cassidy Knutson, Lyssa McGurren, Matt and Mary Sample, Michael Sample, Mimi, Charles, Jared, Lucas and Benjamin Mayfield, and Paul and Autumn Sample; and his beloved dog, Tammy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Don, Ray and Harry; and one sister, Marguerite Mueller.
Emory was born March 25, 1924, in Lee Township, Madison County, the son of Ray J. and Vera (Hays) Sample. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Roosevelt High School in 1942 and attended the University of Iowa and Northwestern University a short time. Emory married Frankie Burns on Nov. 4, 1944, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He worked for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools in the mail delivery department, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, American Legion Hanford Post 5, VFW post 788, the 40 & 8, Disabled American Veterans, and was inducted into the Iowa High School Hall of Fame in basketball and softball.
Emory was a Cubs fan and loved bowling and all sports. He served in the U.S. Navy attached to the U.S. Marines during World War II.
Emory was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Emory’s family wishes to thank Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center for the excellent care and a special thanks to Hospice of Mercy. A Memorial fund has been established.
