Joseph M. Bird was born in the state of Illinois in the year 1849 and died near Wapello, July 1st, 1912, at the age of 72 years. He was a soldier in the Civil war, enlisting in Company L. 8th Iowa Cavalry at Albia, Iowa, Aug. 3, 1863. As a private he was promoted to seventh corporal, Nov. 22, 1863. Jan. 1, 1865, he was again promoted to company Quartermaster Sergeant. He was mustered out of service in Macon, Georgia, Aug. 13, 1865. The funeral service was held on July 2, 1912. The A. M. Taylor Post conducted the funeral services assisted by Rev. David Froeschle of the German M. E. church. Interment in the Wapello cemetery.
