Page 1This community was greatly shocked last Friday by the report that Mrs. August Korn, residing over the rive had been seriously burned while raking and burning leaves at her home. The accident occurred shortly after noon. As we gather the particulars, Mrs. Korn stepped backwards too near the fire and her clothing caught fire and in an instant she was enveloped in flamers. Only the two younger children were present. Before the flames could be extinguished the larger part of her clothing below the waist was burned from her body and the flesh on her hands, lower limbs and around her waist and up her back badly burned. Dr. W. S. Grimes, who had passed the home just a short time before the accident was called. On reaching the home he found the burns much greater than anticipated and Dr. Chittum was hastily summoned.
Naturally Mrs. Korn was suffering awful agony. The wounds were dressed and everything done for her relief. But the case was desperate from the first: though the full effects of the awful shock and suffering could not at first be determined. She lingered, however, with slight hopes of her recovery until Sunday, when she was seized with a severe chill as a result no doubt of the reaction upon the nervous system. Following this she sank into a semi-conscious state from which she never rallied, dying at about five o'clock the same evening, Dec. 1, 1907.
Mrs. Lydia F. Korn, whose maiden name was Brindle, was born July 17, 1858 and practically all her life was spent in this vicinity She was the eldest daughter of John G. Brindle and wife, old residents of Jefferson township. She was united in marriage to August Korn Jr. March 28, 1883 and was the mother of ten children, eight of whom are living. All reside at home or in the near vicinity. Her husband died Oct. 19, 1905, leaving the care of the farm and family upon the wife and mother. Mrs. Korn was always a hard working woman and sacrificed her life and really lost her life in her effort to keep things up and preserve the home for the children. She was a good woman, a member of the Ger. M. E, church in this place. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday, Dec. 3, 1907, at 10 a. m., conducted by Rev's F. J. Sternberg and R. J. Tillman of this place and J. P Hehner, of Delta, Iowa, former pastor here. Interment in the Mallory cemetery.
