Page 1J. C. McCleary, one of the oldest of pioneers of this county, died in Muscatine, Oct. 3, 1907 at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 5 days. He was born in Grandview, Iowa, Oct. 28, 1836, where he resided during all his early and active life on a farm south of Grandview. His parents were Abram and Sarah McCleary, who came from Jefferson county, Ohio, in the early part of 1836 and settled on a homestead a mile and a half south of Grandview, where they continued to reside until their death. They were among the most prominent of pioneer families in Grandview township and active in the affairs of the county in that early day. At one time he owned about fourteen hundred acres of land in that vicinity. He died March 5, 1888, at the age of 83 years. His wife died the year previous.
J. C. McCleary is believed by many to have been the first born white male child born in this county. Mr. McCleary was married to Georgiana C. Davis and to them were born six children: Abram, John D. and Geo. W. all of Muscatine, Mrs. L. S. Graham, who resides between Wapello and Grandview; Philander died in infancy; Chas. O. grew to manhood and lived in Muscatine where he died March 19, 1900. The wife with the three sons and the daughter survive. Deceased was a member of the M. E. church in Grandview and later of the Musserville M. E. church in Muscatine. The remains were brought to Grandview, where funeral services were held last Saturday. Interment in the Grandview cemetery.
