Joseph Girard, a former resident of this county, died September ninth, 1907, at the ripe old age of 81 years. He was born March 18, 1826, near Belfort, Province of Alsace Loraine, France. He came to America when 16 years of age, landing at New Orleans. He attended school at Cape Girardean, Mo., and later at St. Louis. He was finely educated, being versed in five languages. He taught school for eight years in Ft. Madison, Iowa, also for some years in Burlington, at which place he made his home for almost forty years, where he kept a store. Later he kept store in Dodgeville and afterwards in Cairo, this county. He was the fourth child of Dommicand Girard. His death occurred at the home of his son, L. F. Girard, near Wapello, Monday evening. His wife died in 1869. The remains were taken to Burlington yesterday and the funeral was held Thursday morning at 8 o'clock at St. Paul's Catholic church.
