Page 1Nelson Spurgeon died at his home in Union township, Louisa county, Tuesday morning at 4:15, after an illness of eight weeks, caused by ailments incident to old age. The only member of his immediate family surviving him is an aged sister, Mrs. Anna Chapman, who has lived with him for several years since the death of his wife. He was born in Morgan county, O., September 14, 1828 and came to his county when quite young, and has been continuous resident here for more than sixty years, March 11, 1862, he was married to Miss Catherine Colton, who passed away January 14, 1901.
Mr. Spurgeon was for many years a prominent farmer and acquired a competence by industry and economy. Besides his farm in union township, he owned the postoffice building in Columbus Junction and other property. The funeral will be held today at 10 o'clock at the home, under the direction of the Masonic lodge of Columbus Junction of which he was a member. Rev. John Bechtel, of Conesville, will conduct the services.
