David Stephens Dies From Injuries Sunday Evening.
WELL KNOWN IN THE COUNTY
Funeral Services Were Held From His Late Home in Grandview Tuesday and Interment Made in the Grandview Cemetery.
David Stephens, a well known resident of Pt. Louisa township, died Sunday evening as a result of injuries sustained by a kick from a horse. Last Friday evening, while engaged in watering the horses in the barnyard on his home farm, he stopped to pat a colt on the head, and the mother of the colt kicked him. Although medical aid was immediately summoned, it was found that the injuries were serious, and that the result would be fatal, and on Sunday evening, at about seven o'clock he passed away. His death comes as a great shock to the community where he was well respected as an enterprising and energetic farmer, and one of the old-time residents of the county.
David Stephens was born in Canada, and was at the time of his death aged seventy-five years. He spent his boyhood days upon his father's farm, but at the age of twenty years, in 1857, he came to Louisa County, Iowa, where he engaged in the manufacture of brick, making the brick for the Grandview school house. After following this occupation for a year, he went to Atchinson, Kan., where he operated a brick yard until the spring of 1860, when he went to Colorado, with a mule team, and there engaged in mining on the headwaters of the Colorado river. Remaining in that state until the spring of 1861, Mr. Stephens then returned to Grandview, Iowa, from which place he started, equipped with a mule team, for the............
