DELTA - Marvin M. Kirby Jr., 72, of rural Delta, died Wednesday, June 20, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City. His funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer, the Rev. Vince Homan officiating. Burial: Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. Visiting hours are open today at the funeral chapel, with family present 6-8 p.m. Memorials: American Cancer Society or What Cheer United Methodist Church.
Marvin M. Kirby Jr. was born May 14, 1929, north of Rose Hill to Marvin Kirby Sr. and Lucille Hollingsworth Kirby. He was raised in the Lacey area and graduated from Lacey High School in 1947. He farmed with his father for several years and raised and showed cattle in the Lacey area. On Feb. 17, 1951, he married Darlene Kitzman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Soon afterward he entered the United States Army and served with the 5th Armored Division during the Korean War; he earned the Bronze Star. He returned in 1953 and began farming southwest of What Cheer. He retired in 1994. He was a member of What Cheer United Methodist Church, and Universe Lodge No. 242 A.F. & A.M., where he was a past master. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed playing pool.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene, of rural Delta; his daughter, Marcia Peitzman of West Des Moines; two sons and daughters-in-law: Michael and Shelley Kirby of Oskaloosa, and Scott and Lisa Kirby of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law: Norma and Samuel Foster of New Sharon, and Ione and Brand "Sonny" Klein of Oskaloosa.
He was preceeded in death by his parents. (The Oskaloosa Herald, date unknown)
