Jim, when you say it says "Mable" in the census, what year is that again? She dies in May of 1890 in Swan, Iowa. I am wondering where they were when that census was taken. I think Katie just got her information wrong...she had nothing to go by except what John Gale was telling her and he was not telling the truth alot of the time, or just didn't care about getting facts straight.
