Sounds like you have a mess to sort out!
Sometimes families will do a lot of cover-up over things we take for granted these days such as children out of wedlock. My own grandfather on my father's side was married to a woman and it was annulled almost immediately. Then he turned around and "supposed" to have married twice more but no records have ever been found to that effect and he had several children by them including my father. Obituaries were misleading with overtones of cover-ups including wrong maiden names and wrong marriage years!
Here is the reference for that census page in case you wish to look it over. But since we have Bernice in Kansas City that year, a John Gale of the correct age, states familiar to the family, a wife named Mable, and a marriage that took place about the same time as "Mable's" death, I think we have the correct people. Maybe Katie and Mable were mixed up as to who was who and when they married. Looks like Katie was the first wife, died c.1890 and then he married Mable.
Also maybe you have been following the wrong John Gale in later years where he is actually John L. rather than John N. ? Just an idea.

I don't see John in the 1910 census so did he die between 1900-1910 in Kansas City?
