Jim, I find that anything is possible..and I cannot always trust the census. I have to sort of figure out all the possibilities as to why such information is given. That's why I doubt John Gale was home when the census taker interviewed Katie...she got alot of John's personal information incorrect. She had been hired to care for John's first wife as she was dying of TB, and also to care for the two little children, Bernice and Albert. Funny thing, though, I sent for Bernice's marriage certificate from Omaha and she lists Katie Kelsey Gale as her mother. All this time I was told she hated her stepmother and Bernice HAD to know she had a natural mother that died..she was 6 when her mother died. Who knows why she put Katie as her mother....I would not have given the woman credit if she was as mean as my grandmother led me to believe. Family lore is often irrational and lots of times not based on fact at all.
