Steve,

I am not sure if you are tracking the correct couple because:

1870 census shows only one Henry Tobiason in Wayne township with wife shown as Engel and children Kate and Mary. The 1880 census shows the same husband and wife as Henry and K.M. with children Katie, Mary, Anne, Rudolph, Rheinard.
In the 1885 census it shows John Henry and wife Catherine with children Catherine, Gesche, Anne E., Michael R., Reinhard, and Delia.

Now, if you look at the Zion Church Death Records (and if the transcription is correct), John Henrich Tobiason died July 13, 1891 but Katharerina Margaretha Tobiassen died January 20, 1888. I can see if there was a typo of 1888 vs. 1898 but the date is way off too and can assume that in the 1880 census K.M. is her. So... may need to dig deeper on this unless he remarried?

Oops... looked at the marriage books and see that he did remarry to Janken Margaretha Zimmerman on February 19, 1891 so he died only a few months afterwards.

What is odd is that they don't show a death for her in 1898 but one for a Anke Margareta Tobiason on January 21, 1930. Wonder if there are spelling variations here or two different people since you found a suicide notice? Maybe she wasn't recorded by the church because of that?
