John Shields married Mrs. Fidelia Benadom June 21, 1871 in Rome Township. Her maiden name was Burroughs and she was born around 1827 in either Ohio or Vermont. Her first husband was Simon Peter Benadom (1826-1921) whom she married 1844 in Lancaster, Ohio. The strange part is that Benadom was the postmaster in Jones County 1856 and well known in Lincoln, Nebraska as a pioneer after moved there in 1868. But all histories and some databases mention that Fidelia died in 1866 which is not true. She can be found on the 1880 Lincoln, Pottawattamie Co., Kansas census with her youngest son Wilford. One wonders why she was written off as dead?
We still don't know what happened to John F. Shields???
As for his daughter Catherine "Kate" M. Shields, this is another oddity. She is shown having married March 7, 1870 at Wayne, Jones Co., Iowa to L. J. Whitney (would love to know what the initials stand for or if they are correct?). Only 3-months later she is seen in the June 1870 census living with her father and her infant Charlie who was 1-month old and the husband is nowhere to be found. Did he die after the marriage or did he marry Kate out of honor since she was already pregnant then leave? Does anyone know? She remarried December 9, 1872 in Anamosa to William Henry Ellis but Charlie is not around in the 1880 census. Did he die or taken away from her?
