William W. Walrod was the son of James and Susan Walrod born in New York c.1826 and married Julia Ann (Juliann) Hakes 14 September 1848 in Jones County (Marriage Book A); she was born in New York c. 1830. Census records after their marriage show them living in Bloomfield Township, Clinton County, Iowa in 1849, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1856 and in Clay County, Jones County in 1860 with three children (Francis, Betsy A. and Cornelius). I cannot find any further records about Julia but there is a marriage record for William W. Walrod and Mary C. Miller 5 March 1864 in Jones County. The 1870 census shows a William and Mary Walrod living in Bloomfield Township, Clinton County, Iowa with Francis, Cornelius, other younger children, and Susan Walrod (age 70). Probate information from Clinton County indicates Wm.’s father died in 1867. I can find no records for William or Mary beyond 1870. The mysteries to be solved are:
1) What happened to Julia, when and where?
2) What happened to William and Mary after 1870?
3) Who were Julia Hakes’ parents? Since William’s family had been living in Clinton County and they were married in Jones County, I am assuming Julia’s family lived there. However, I have only found one Hakes family in Jones County in 1850. This is Harry Hakes with eight children ages 18 to 3 all born in NY (no wife listed) in Fairview Township, Jones County. The 1856 census indicated that Julia had been in Iowa for 9 years; the last census found for Harry was in 1852. Harry Hakes could have been her father.
Any leads would be appreciated!
