James L. SPAULDING's marriage in1870

Could someone give me some information on a James L. SPAULDING that was issued a marriage certificate to Mary J.MARTIN Jan. 16, 1870 in Jones Co. What happened to him, as I know Mary J married an Updegraft in March of 1871? Could they have divorced, or did he die? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Mary Jane <
