WILLIAMS, ALEXANDER

JAMES H. WILLIAMS, dealer in dry goods and groceries, corner of Main and Ford streets, Anamosa; is a native of Newark, N. J., and was born in 1826; he grew up to manhood there; he afterward lived in Pennsylvania for six years; then came to Iowa and arrived here April 19, 1858, and engaged in farming; in December, 1861, he removed to Anamosa and engaged in mercantile business, the firm being Alderman & Williams; in 1868, he closed out his business, and in the year following he again engaged in business; in 1871, R. L. Matson became associated with him in the business, and the firm was Williams & Matson until September, 1873; since April, 1874, Mr. Williams has carried on the business. He hold the position of Chief Engineer of the Fire Department; he has held the office of Justice of the Peace and other town and school offices. In 1850, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Alexander, from Newark N.J.; they have four children—Alexander Q., Samuel I., Lizzie and James H., Jr.
