Dr. Paul D. Meyer, 86, died February 26th following a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife Peggy; two sons, Stephan of New York City and David of Iowa City; his brother Alfred (Miriam); and his grandson Abraham.
He was preceded in death by his son Mark and his parents Alfred and May Meyer.
Paul was born June 16, 1938 in Chicago IL. He graduated with distinction with a B.S. in Chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1959 and with a B.D. from the Conservative Baptist Theology Seminary in 1963 (where he met and married Peggy). He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in Religion in 1967, and that year he also received a Fulbright Scholarship for post-graduate studies in Israel. After briefly teaching religion in Minnesota in the early 1970s he returned to Iowa City to do biochemical research. In 1978 he started medical school at the age of 40, earning an M.D. from the University of Iowa in 1981. He did a Pediatric residency at the University of Iowa and a Cardiac Anesthesiology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked as an anesthesiologist in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Texas before returning to Iowa City in 2000, retiring in 2010.
Paul and Peggy were involved with many medical mission trips to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Haiti, the West Bank and Gaza, and the Philippines through the Presbyterian Church (USA), Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, as well as Doctors Without Borders.
Paul enjoyed teaching, both professionally and informally. Paul was an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and Paul and Peggy are long-time members of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, where services will be held at a later date.
