Thomas L. “Tom” Hansen Sr. age 84, longtime member of the Iowa City Fire Department and the Johnson County Emergency Management Agency died Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City followed by a reception at the Eagles Lodge. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Iowa City Fire Department Benevolent Fund to support its Honor Guard.

Tom was born October 27, 1940, in Iowa City the son of Holmer “Swede” and Bernice “Bea” Hansen. Growing up in Iowa City, he attended schools here graduating from City High School with the Class of 1958. As a young man with a family of 6, he worked a number of jobs many at the same time just to “make ends meet” as they say.

He joined the Iowa City Fire Department in 1968, and for the next 27 years, he always worked hard giving it everything he's got, then would give even more as he rose through the ranks with the ICFD then finally retiring as a Battalion Fire Chief in 1996.
After the ICFD, Tom wanted to continue to serve and give back to the community that had given so much to him, he then started his second career with Johnson County Emergency Management Agency until his final retirement from Public Service in 2001.

Tom cherished the many relationships that he made throughout his 35 years in public service. Always being very humble in his career accomplishments he let the results do the speaking for him. Tom was always very proud with a job “well done”.

He loved and was loved so very much by his family.

His family includes his four sons, Thomas Hansen Jr. (Sharon), Michael Hansen (Deb), Patrick Hansen, and Timothy Hansen (Kelli); grandchildren, Paul Hansen (Cindy), Missy Clair, Emma Wright, Courtney Hansen, Coulten Hansen, T.J. Hansen, Olivia Hansen, Kylie McDonald (Eric) and Emily Meineke (Ryan); great-grandchildren, Taylor Hansen, Drew Hansen, Nathan McDonald, Landon McDonald, Lily McDonald, Kayden McDonald, Charlotte Meineke, Bodi Meineke, Navaya Clair, Elijah Eldeen and Ellie Eldeen; and Tom’s sister, Suzanne Hansen – Klucas (Joe Klucas).

Tom was preceded in death by his parents.
