John McCoy, 89, of Iowa City, passed away on January 20, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment and military honors will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
John was born on January 13, 1936, in Welton, Iowa, to Leo and Alma (Lafayette) McCoy. After graduating from Welton High School, he proudly served two years in the United States Army. Following his discharge, John attended college at The University of Iowa.
In 1964, John moved to Davenport, Iowa to work in sales for Dewey Portland Cement Company. On January 25, 1964, he married Barbara Spahn in Davenport, and together they had three children. The family later settled in Iowa City, Iowa where John continued his career with the cement company. After almost 40 years of dedicated service, he retired in 2000.
Outside of work, John had a passion for golf, baseball, and cheering on the Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers. He was also a loyal Iowa Hawkeye fan and a season ticket holder for many years, especially enjoying football games at Kinnick Stadium. John took great joy in cheering on his grandchildren in their sporting and creative activities, always supporting them with love and enthusiasm. A devoted family man, he cherished the time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
John is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; children: John (Laurin) McCoy, Patrick (Tara) McCoy, and Trina (Jeremy) Surratt; grandchildren: Declan McCoy, Kira Surratt, and Katya Surratt; and siblings: Janice Eckelberg, Pat McCoy, and Michael McCoy. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Beverly (Fred) Geers, Marisue (George) McDowell, and William McCoy; and his brother-in-law, David Eckelberg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
