Following college, Steve served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Japan, where his passion for travel started. He began his professional career at Sabena-Belgian Airlines in Chicago, leading tour groups throughout European, Middle-Eastern and Asian countries.

He held upper management positions at several Hawaiian hotels, including Waiakea Village Hotels in Hilo and the InterContinental Maui. His final career role was managing the New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel, where he founded the Diamond Head Climbing Club at the neighboring Diamond Head Crater park. He encouraged hikers to pick up trash on the paths as they hiked to the top to enjoy the scenic views and rewarded them with a certificate from the hotel when they returned.
After retiring in 1994, Steve and June built their dream home on the Big Island of Hawaii. They lived for 15 years before relocating to Lake Oswego, Oregon, in 2009.
