WALTER W. HISEL

Walter Welch HISEL, son of John and Susannah WELCH HISEL was born May 9, 1888, in Cedar township, Jefferson county, Iowa.

In 1892, he moved with his parents to Fairfield where he attended the city schools and grew to young manhood.

In 1905 he went to Minneapolis where he attended Business College, and was later employed by several prominent Minneapolis business concerns. Of late years he has been a public stenographer.

September 22, 1917, at Camp Dodge, he enlisted in the 337th Field Artillery upopn the (sic) organization of the regiment and served with the regiment in headquarters company until it was mustered out of service, January 31, 1919.

Four months of this service was spent overseas. He enlisted as a private and was discharged battalion sargeant major. He had been in poor health the past six months and passed away December 12, 1933, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

His father passed away March 19, 1899. He leaves his mother, Mrs. Susannah HISEL and two brothers Percy C. and John J. of this city and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Edna GALBRAITH of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Clara May KERRICK of Claude, Texas. A sister Alice Maud passed away May 21, 1926.

Funeral services were held December 17, 1933, at the home of his mother, 1000 South Main street, in charge of Dr. U. S. Smith of the First M. E. church. Miss Cora A. Ball sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "In the Garden."

John A. Huglin, a friend of many years gave the following tribute: "As a friend of the family for 30 years or more, I wish to pay a tribute of love and respect to Walter. During my early acquaintance with him, he was but a boy of about ten years and I knew him all through his boyhood days until he was about 20 years of age. He was one of those boys that loved his home, loved his mother, loved his brothers and sisters. He was willing and active in serving his mother especially. He frequently made visits home. When he came, he came with a smile. His greetings were pleasant. His presence was enjoyed by all. Not only did he love his own but he was equally lovable to strangers, especially to old folks. It was one of his outstanding accomplishments to do some good for his elders and for those who had gone before him. His motto and his life seemed to have been the Golden Rule. He did to others as he wished to be done by. He frequently counseled with Percy, his older brother and with other members of his family.

Another outstanding feature of Walters life was his love for his country. When the call came to go over there, he answered the call. He carried the flag. He helped to win a glorious victory. His discharge contained the words, faithful and honest. The flag which he carried is preserved in the Capitol of Minnesota, and as a tribute to his country's service the flag now bedecks his beautiful casket here in his very home and his buddies surround his remains to pay a fitting salute and goodbye.

I recognize in him these three outstanding accomplishments: Love of home, love of parents and love of country. And it is to his mother great credit to know in this hour of sorrow her son was faithful and loyal to the end."

The services at the Mausoleum were in charge of Allen Jewett Post, American Legion. The firing squad of the funeral detachment executed the rifle salute of three volleys before taps (sic - Taps) sounded. Arthur V. Lundquist, A. A. Hillman, A. V. Gumm, Frank Scott, William Swartz, Peter Staves, all members of the Legion, were the casket attendants. Interment was in the Fairfield Mausoleum.
