January 15, 1956 - November 6, 2024

Karla Kay Shank, age 68 of Prairie City, passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at MercyOne in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 4:00 pm at the Monroe Presbyterian Church. The family will greet friends beginning at 3:00 pm on Sunday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the MercyOne Oncology Department. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com

The daughter of Donald LeRoy and Donna Jean (Schippers) Gildersleeve, Karla was born on January 15, 1956 in Des Moines. She graduated from Monroe High School and went on to receive her BSN at Drake University. Karla worked as a Registered Nurse at Des Moines General, MercyOne in Des Moines and most recently at the Iowa Digestive Disease Center. She retired in 2023. While in 4H in school, Karla showed horses. She had a love for all animals especially, her dogs. She helped the Des Moines Kennel Club with confirmation classes, going to dog shows, and enjoyed traveling. She loved the St. Louis Cardinals and Drake Men's Basketball team. She had a great sense of humor. Karla was also a member of the Des Moines Kennel Club, Samoyed Club of America, and the Samoyed Association of Minneapolis/St. Paul (SAMS) and a previous member of the Des Moines Obedience Club.

Those left to honor her memory include her step sons, Michael and Erik Shank; her mother, Donna Gildersleeve; her brother, Dean (Becky) Gildersleeve; her niece, Dawn (Taylor) Bodin and their children, Grace and Rose her God Daughter, Melissa (Long) Snook and her husband Tim and many other family and friends. Preceding her in death was her father, husband in January of 2024 and a brother, Doyle Lee Gildersleeve.
