Iowan Among ‘Most Wanted’
Ex-Prizefighter Sought by FBI
Washington – (AP) – An ex-prizefighter who allegedly used his wife as an accomplice in a series of robberies, car thefts and jail breaks Thursday was put on the FBI’s list of “10 most wanted men.”
He is Thomas Edward Young, 34, of Colfax, Ia. He has many aliases. His wife, Margaret Rita (Margie) Young, 32, is also a widely sought fugitive.
Both are charged with the burglary of the State Bank of Satanta, Kas. on the night of Dec. 30, 1951, when some Satanta commercial firms also were broken into by a band of thieves who got away with $2,100 in cash and other loot.
Behind that foray, the FBI said, is a long trail of other depredations, including some post office robberies in the Midwest, in which both Youngs are alleged to have been involved.
The bureau said Young is a powerful man, weighing more than 200 pounds, who once did a carnival bear-wrestling act, and who has a police record dating back 21 years.
Mrs. Young, previously married, is the mother of three children. Her criminal record goes back to 1940, when she served the first of three separate terms in the Nebraska state reformatory for women for grand larceny and forgery.
The FBI said Mrs. Young is known to have an abdominal cyst, which requires medication that can only be obtained on prescription from a physician. She is described as a skilled seamstress and needle worker.
Young was put on the “most wanted” list as a replacement for Harry Burton, wanted for murder at Los Angeles and taken into custody at Cody, Wyo., Feb. 7.
The Youngs escaped last August from jail at Sioux City where they were being held for a drug store burglary at Sloan, Ia., in which $1,000 worth of narcotics were stolen. Earlier they had been involved in a chase from Fort Madison prison to Burlington after they met a prisoner who had just been released.
After their Sioux City escape the Youngs later were captured in Montana and taken to Fargo, N.D., where they broke jail last Dec. 28.
Young’s criminal record dates back to a 1930 sentence to the Iowa boys’ training school at Eldora.
