James H. Swaney was born in Ann Arbor, Mich., on December 25, 1838 and died at his home in Preston July 1 having reached the age of nearly 75 years. He came with his people to this locality at the age of 3 years and was one of eight children, four boys and four girls, on brother alone surviving him.
Upon reaching young manhood, Mr. Swaney engaged in farming near Preston and in 1862 enlisted on Company I, Thirty-first Iowa Infantry to do his part in preserving the union serving his country faithfully until the close of the war.
He was an honored and enthusiastic member of the Masonic order belonging to the chapter of Knights Templar, shrine, consistory and was also a member of the Eastern Star lodge. Besides all of these fraternal associates, he leaves a bereaved wife and brother, who have the sympathy of a host of friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the home and were conducted by Rev. Gray, the Masonic funeral rites being carried out by that order with interment in Preston cemetery.
