Emily Kenyon was born in Washington county, New York, February 6, 1812. June 21, 1831 she became the wife of William Mason, of Warren county, New York. After a few years they removed to Pennsylvania, and in June 1855, came to Iowa, and settled on a farm 4.5 miles west of this city. Mr. Mason was a farmer, blacksmith and local preacher of some note and much earnestness. Mrs. Mason was a woman of excellent character, and was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. She was converted at the age of twelve and became a member of the Baptist church. In 1840 she transferred her allegiance to the M. E. church and she remained a consistent Christian to the close of her long life.
She died of old age at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S. T. Holmes, in Vermont street, this city, about one o'clock a.m. on Saturday, November 30. She attended services at the M.E. church on the Sunday before her death. She was the mother of ten children-- seven daughters and three sons. Two of her children and her husband precede her to the better land.
