Hello,
I am Tom Parson and I am a Park Ranger with the Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center, a unit of Shiloh National Military Park. Although we are not related, I have some information concerning someone on your family tree that you may find of interest.
Dewitt Clinton Wade (1836-1862) was a corporal in the 12th Iowa Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. On October 3, 1862 he was wounded at the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi. He was taken to the Corona Female College which had been pressed into service as a hospital, and he died there of his wound on November 10, 1862. He was buried to the southwest of the hospital in the same grave as a Private Barkley Bunn of the 47th Illinois Infantry. In 1867 his remains were moved to the Corinth National Cemetery, Corinth, MS but there was insufficient information on his wooden headboard to make a proper identification.
The records documenting his move to the cemetery stated he was of Company H, 12th Iowa Infantry and had the initials, "D.C.W." While it seems this should have been enough to make a proper identification it did not happen and he was buried in a section of the cemetery reserved for unknown soldiers.
In 1877 his wooden headboard was changed to a marble stone marked D.C.W.
I have been researching "unknown" soldiers in this cemetery for many years and Corp. Wade is one of the soldiers I have identified. Last week, with my research complete, I sent off thirty packages of documentation to the National Cemetery Administration in Washington, D.C., requesting proper headstones for these soldiers. D. Clinton Wade is one of the thirty.
Dewitt Clinton Wade is buried in Section A, plot 2073.
