Samuel Wright was born in 1807, the son of Thomas Wright and Betsey Smead. His life spanned much of the 19th century, a time of significant change and westward expansion in the United States.
## Early Life and Family
While details of Samuel's early years are scarce, we know he was born into a family with roots in New England. The Wrights and Smeads were likely among the many families who migrated westward in search of new opportunities as the young nation expanded.
## Life in Iowa
By 1850, at the age of 42, Samuel had established himself in South Fork Township, Jackson County, Iowa[1]. This area, located in the eastern part of the state near the Mississippi River, was still relatively new territory, having only been opened for settlement in the 1830s. Samuel would have been among the early pioneers in this region, likely engaged in farming and helping to build the new community.
A decade later, the 1860 census still placed Samuel, now 52, in South Fork Township[2]. His continued presence in the area suggests he had put down roots and found success in his endeavors.
## Later Years
As Samuel entered his twilight years, he appears to have moved into the town of Maquoketa, the county seat of Jackson County. The 1880 census lists him at age 73 as a "Retired Farmer" and head of his household. This transition from rural life to town residency was common for aging farmers of the era, allowing easier access to services while maintaining connections to the agricultural community they had long been part of.
## Legacy and Passing
Samuel Wright passed away on February 26, 1892, at the age of 85. He was laid to rest in Maquoketa, Iowa, the community he had called home for decades. His long life had witnessed the transformation of Iowa from frontier territory to established state, and he had played his part in that development.
Samuel's journey from his New England roots to becoming a pioneer and respected citizen of Jackson County, Iowa, reflects the broader story of America's westward expansion. His life serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of those who helped build the nation's heartland.
