James “Jim” Patrick Martin, 65, of Belle Plaine, IA (formerly of North English, IA) passed away suddenly January 22, 2025 due to medical issues.

Jim was born January 6, 1960 to Russell “Gus” and Helen (Polton) Martin. He grew up on the family farm in rural Parnell, IA and graduated from Williamsburg High School, class of 1978. Following school, Jim worked for Iowa County Secondary Roads Department for 33 years until retirement. After retirement he continued to provide for his family working for the county and as a farm hand.

On April 21, 1990, Jim married Brenda Elmore at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook, IA. Together they lived in rural Parnell until building a home in rural North English. The couple moved to Belle Plaine in October of 2024.

Jim was a true outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing and just being outdoors. He enjoyed a good game of cards on Saturday nights with friends. Through his hardheaded, stubbornness Jim was kind and had the biggest heart of anyone you met. He selflessly did anything for anyone. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, who were his everything.

Jim is survived by his wife, Brenda of Belle Plaine; daughters, Amanda (Travis) Grieder of Brooklyn, Jessica Martin of Iowa City; grandchildren, Emma and Wyatt Grieder; siblings, Connie (Jim) Cook of Parnell, Shirly Choi of Las Vegas, NV, Marcia (Don) Sterba of North Liberty, Mike (Lydia) Martin of Parnell, Mary Martin of Kalona, Patty Martin of Toledo, Chuck Martin of Williamsburg; brother-in-law, Jerry Heumphreus of Coralville.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Julie Heumphreus; brother-in-law, Tony Choi; and infant brother.

Funeral service is 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at Hrabak-Neuhaus Funeral Service, Belle Plaine. Burial will take place at Champion Hill Cemetery, North English, IA.
