Helen Margaret Bucher was born July 12, 1939, in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Kenneth and Florence Amelia (Taminosian) Young. She grew up in Omaha and graduated from Benson High School in 1957. Helen received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Iowa State University and her Masters of Education from the University of Iowa. On March 4, 1961, Helen was united in marriage to Russell Dean Bucher in Omaha. She was a home economics teacher at English Valleys High School for 29 years. After she retired, she continued to serve as a substitute for several years. Helen was a member of the North English United Methodist Church, Delta Zeta Sorority, a 50 year member of the Eastern Star, Fortnightly Club, Hats & More, Keokuk Co. Retired School Personnel Assoc., and Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators. She enjoyed golfing, gardening, sewing, reading, swimming, spending winters in Florida, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helen died on Friday, November 1, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, at the age of 85 years.

Helen is survived by her husband Russell of North English; two children Deb (Mark) Anderson of West Branch, Michael Bucher of South English and; seven grandchildren, Kristin (Marshall) McElhinney, Kyle Anderson, Trina (Shawn) Hilligas, Keith (Alicia) Reed, Russ (Lydia) Chittick, Matt (Lindsey) Chittick and Brooke (Chris) Dulaney; nine great grandchildren Sienna McElhinney, Sadie McElhinney, Talon Hilligas, Wyatt Hilligas, Luna Reed, Robby Chittick, Emily Chittick, Mackenzie Dulaney and Allison Dulaney. She was preceded by her parents; a daughter Sally Bucher Chittick Long and a brother Robert Young.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will follow in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home. Memorials may be given in Helen’s honor to the North English History Center, English Valleys Community Scholarship Foundation or donor’s choice.
