James “Jim” Lloyd Deitrich, age 80, of Sigourney, died Thursday, October 24, 2024, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Jim was born on June 19, 1944, in his family home in Sigourney, Iowa, as the middle child among nine siblings. Growing up, he learned the value of hard work, starting at just 12 years old with McNurlen Produce while also attending school. After graduating from Sigourney High School in 1962, Jim’s life took a patriotic turn when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1966, where he proudly served in Germany until his discharge in February 1968.

Jim married Charlotte Dick, on April 21, 1968, at the Ollie United Methodist Church. Following his military service, he continued his education at Northwest Iowa Vocational School in Sheldon, graduating as the valedictorian of his Power Lineman class. His career as a lineman began in Sigourney in 1968 and led him to become Superintendent of the TIP Rural Electric Cooperative, where he served with dedication until his retirement in January 2007.

Known for his warmth, Jim was a true people person who delighted in meeting new friends and engaging with everyone he encountered. He was a proud 50-year member of Webb Lodge #182 and the Aspasia Chapter of the Eastern Star, where he held the esteemed position of Grand Sentinel in 2016.

In the spirit of giving, Jim served as Santa’s helper for several years, bringing joy to hospital patients, nursing home residents, and families across the area each holiday season. His legacy of kindness continues to touch lives.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Charlotte, and their two children: Jane (Rob) Luetje of North English and Michael Deitrich of Norwalk; grandchildren Morgan (Luke) Oehlerich of Wellman and AJ Bruns of North English; and two step-grandchildren, Lacey (Matt) Franks of Ely and Allie (Adam) Vice of Washington. He is also survived by his brother McGee (Jane) Deitrich of Cedar Rapids and his sister Sherry (Tony) Hammes of Jackson, Missouri, along with a host of nieces and nephews who carry forward his spirit. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Deitrich and Virginia Werenberg; his in-laws Francis and Henrietta Dick, two sisters; Garland and Sarah, and four brothers, Bill, John David, Garry, and Jerry.

Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. To all who knew him, he was a cherished friend, a true embodiment of kindness, and an irreplaceable presence in his community. He is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
