Richard Pugh was born march 12, 1805 to richard and mary pugh of pencaedu, parish of llanbrynmair, montgomeryshire, north wales. he attended the congregational church in llanbrynmair under rev. john roberts. he was a weaver and worked several years for the well-known john hughes of cwmcarnedd-uchaf, parish of llanbrynmair. llanbrynmair was famous for its weaving industry. he came to america on the ship "lancashire" with the rev. benjamin chidlaw of paddy's run, ohio and others from montgomeryshire in april, 1840. he stayed about a year in ebensburg, pennsylvania with his sister before moving to cincinnati, ohio. he married ann evans, daughter of david and jane evans of melin y palasau, township of derlwyn, parish of carno, montgomeryshire, north wales. he moved to troy township where he was one of the first settlers. they had three children. after a seven week illness, he died about 9 o'clock in the morning on august 4, 1850 from the effects of a cold that he caught when he stayed overnight in a corn mill where he had gone to help a friend. a poem was written by yr alarus(bardic name) to commemorate his death. three months later, his widow, ann, gave birth to their last child, mary.
