Ida Grove Man Killed in Train-Truck Crash
Gaylen E. Hemphill, 45, of Ida Grove, who planned to open an Earl May Seed store in Battle Creek, October 15th, was killed Saturday morning, September 6, when the 1957 pickup truck he was driving collided with a North Western railway freight train on the railroad crossing at the west edge of Ida Grove. According to Coroner Dr. John B. Dressler, his death was caused by a fractured skull and broken neck. The pickup truck was a total wreck. Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday, September 8th, in the Christensen Funeral Home at Ida Grove, with Rev. Wayne Carlson officiating. Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery. Survivors are his widow; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. E. D. Hemphill of Ida Grove; two brothers, Vilas and Marvel, of Fort Dodge, and his grandmother, Mrs. Ellen Hemphill of Denison.
