Lynne Lorenzo, 96, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Evans Memorial Home after a brief illness.
Marilynne Anne Perrine was born July 15, 1928, in Chicago, IL, to Dwight and Marie (Melvin) Perrine. She grew up in St. Petersburg, FL, and Chicago, where she attended the Caldwell School. She graduated from Chicago’s Loretto Academy in 1946.
She attended Drake University in Des Moines, from 1946-50, pledging the Delta Zeta sorority in the fall of 1946. She graduated from Drake with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education in May 1950.
While at Drake, she met Frank Lorenzo; they married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Des Moines on April 21, 1951. After graduation, Lynne taught at Saylor Elementary School in Des Moines for two years. After living and teaching in Jewell, Rhodes, and Lime Springs, the Lorenzos settled in Cresco in 1963. Lynne taught fourth grade at Central School from 1962 to 1965. After being hired to teach Title I Reading in 1966, she taught fifth and sixth grade at Central, as well as fourth grade at the Fairgrounds. Eventually, she began teaching exclusively at St. Joseph Elementary (now Notre Dame Elementary) until her retirement in 1990.
In addition to teaching, Lynne was active in St. Joseph’s/Notre Dame parish. She served as a lector, taught CCD classes, and directed the CCD program for 7 years in the 1980s. She also volunteered for Altar Care and sang in the choir from 1984 until 2017.
After retiring, Lynne focused on tutoring, volunteer work, and her hobbies. She volunteered at Notre Dame Elementary and tutored students in early literacy and math until 2019. She was an active member of the Howard County Hospital Auxiliary from 1990 to 2017, serving as president for three years. She was a founding member of the Piecemakers Quilt Club in 1992 with Helen Perkins and Bee Bengfort, serving as club president for several terms. She and Frank spent many years as members of the Cresco Country Club, where they enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with friends. They also escaped Cresco during the winter months to golf; they stayed in Myrtle Beach, SC, and Biloxi, MS, before deciding on Corpus Christi, TX, as their winter home until Frank’s death in 2011.
In 2017, Lynne moved to Cresco Assisted Living, where she continued to enjoy listening to music, reading, quilting, playing bridge and dominoes, playing the piano, and keeping in touch with her kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on the phone and on FaceTime.
Lynne is survived by three children: Rick Lorenzo of Cedar Rapids, Sue Larson of Hillsboro, WI, and Steve Lorenzo of New York City; her son-in-law Greg Holcomb of Conyers, GA; four grandchildren: Bryan Jacobs of Salt Lake City, UT, Cassie Lorenzo Krancki and her husband Joe of London, England, Justin Lorenzo of Duluth, MN, and Helena (Ellie) Lorenzo of Cedar Rapids; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Kathy Holcomb, an infant daughter, and an infant great-granddaughter.
