OBITUARY.
Sanborn.
The news of the sudden death of Mr. L. P. Sanborn at Rochester, Minn., last Saturday morning came as a shock to the whole community. Mr. Sanborn had been in failing health for several months. The latter part of November in company with his wife, he went to Prairie du Chien where both took treatment for rheumatism for about five weeks. Upon their return Mr. Sanborn seemed to improve for a while. Later, however, anaemia developed which for a while did not seem very serious. But within the last ten days his condition became more alarming and last Tuesday he was taken to Rochester for the purpose of blood transfusion. The weakened condition of his heart prevented the doctors from making the attempt and early Saturday morning, much sooner than his friends expected, the end came.
Lewis Philander Sanborn was born at Rolling Prairie, Wis., February 10, 1852. In 1866, when fourteen years of age, he came with his parents to Lime Springs, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Caroline Punteney at Plymouth Rock, Sept. 18, 1881, where they lived for four or five years. Most of his life has been spent in Howard county. For twenty years he owned and conducted a general merchandise store in Bonair, and was at the same time postmaster. He then ran a flour and feed store in Cresco for five years. For the past two years he has been with the Alliance Mercantile association.
Mr. Sanborn was a man of sterling character. He was always strictly honest in business and rather than have any unpleasant words, would always give the other fellow the big end of the bargain. In all his business affairs, he lived the Golden Rule. He was also a true friend even to the extent of exposing his own health and convenience in order to help a friend. He was a born optimist and always looked on the bright side of things.
The home life of Mr. and Mrs. Sanborn was unusually pleasant and happy. Of an amiable disposition, he brought sunshine and cheer into the home circle and was always most happy when in the circle of those who were so dear to him. For some years he has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church of which he remained faithful until the end. In thirty-eight years of married life, his decease is the first to break the home circle.
Mr. Sanborn went to his eternal reward early Saturday morning, March 8th, 1919, aged 67 years and 28 days. His relatives and friends are many. Those who will specially cherish his memory are: his beloved and faithful wife; four children, Mrs. E. E. Griffith of Lime Springs, Iowa; Mrs. Webb Richards of Mortlach, Saskatchewan, Candada{sic}, Miss Effie in the home and Phil of Council Bluffs, Iowa. In addition to these there are four brothers: H. H Sanborn of Lime Springs, F. W. of Little Cedar, Iowa, E. V. of Vinton, Iowa, and W. W. of Madison, Wis. There are also his father-in-law Mr. G. V. Punteney who in the 100th year of his age and four grandchildren besides a large number of friends.
The funeral service was held in the First Methodist church Monday afternoon, March 10, at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. G. Copeland. The Odd Fellows and Rebekah fraternal orders attended in a body, the former conducting a part of the service. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Interment was made in New Oregon cemetery.
