Mary Skoda, age 95, passed away on October 17, 2024 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, IA.
Mary J. Skoda was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa on June 19, 1929. She was the only child born to Victor and Kaia (Knutson) Benson. Mary grew up in the Ridgeway area. She attended school and graduated from Cresco High School.
Mary married Arnold Skoda on May 9, 1951 at the Assumption Rectory in Cresco. Together they had one son, Arlyn.
Mary spent most of her working career in the Howard County Recorder’s office. She began as deputy recorder in 1958. She took a few years off when Arlyn was born, later returning as the Howard County Recorder from 1975-1993.
Mary and Arnie enjoyed camping in Fairbault at Cedar Lake with the three grandchildren and family friends. Together they took the grandchildren on several trips including: Yellowstone, Door County, Apostle Islands, Martha’s Vineyard and Salem, MA. Mary and Arnie were able to travel to several countries over the years including: Norway, Spain and El Salvador.
Holidays were a special time spent at their home. Christmas was especially one her favorites. Easter was spent toasting with champagne at the Raddison in LaCrosse, WI. She enjoyed many shopping trips with Tammi and the girls. Mary loved to stop at the Seventh Rib in Racine for treats. On Tuesday’s you would find Mary at the golf course spending “Women’s Day” together with the ladies. And Thursday night’s she and her friends would head over to Ridgeway to see Amanda and Amelia and enjoy dollar burgers. Mary loved spending time with her family. She also had a soft spot for her grandchildren’s pets; whether it was a gerbil, dog, cat or boa constrictor, she always asked about them.
Survivors include her daughter in-law Tammi Skoda, three grandchildren: Adam (Jessica) Skoda, Amanda (Erik) Larson and Amelia (Damien) Minter, six great-grandsons: Aidan and Awnan Skoda, Krosby and Lars Larson and DJ and Connor Minter.
She was preceded in death by her parents Kaia and Victor Benson, husband Arnold “Arnie” Skoda (2005), son Arlyn Skoda and great-grandson Aries Minter.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at First Lutheran Church in Cresco. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday morning. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Schmelzer (formerly Lindstrom) Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
