Christine K. Vokaty, age 65, of Protivin, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 1, 2024, at home with her family by her side.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Protivin Community Center on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations in memory of Chris can be made to Howard County Community Hospice or HOCA.

Christine “Chris” Kay Henry was born September 21, 1958, in Cresco, Iowa, daughter of John and Katherine (Schneberger) Henry. Chris grew up on a farm with her parents, three brothers, and two sisters, this is where her love of horses started. She graduated from Crestwood High school in 1977. After graduation Chris began working at Red Owl, a grocery store in Cresco, IA. While dancing in Lourdes, Chris met her future husband, Edward “Ed” Vokaty. Ed and Chris were married in June of 1977. The couple had their first child, Stephanie in 1980; who passed away the day after she was born, followed by Miranda in 1981, and Samantha (Sammi) in 1984. While the girls were young, she was home with them, and provided in-home daycare, bookkeeping for Vokaty 4x4, and Bill’s Lawn & Garden. While working at Radcliff’s, Chris opened up a business with her sister, Jackie, called CJ’s Graphics. For over 25 years, Chris has been employed with Cresco Heating and Ventilating and Lennox Dealer.

Chris was a “do-er.” She was always on the go and kept her mind and hands busy. If she was alone at home, she was cross-stitching, making diamond art, making jewelry, reading, or doing puzzle books. If you wanted something done everyone knew Chris would help. Chris did everything for her girls. Rides to sporting events, shopping, moving, nothing was off limits. Ed and Chris loved being grandparents to Miranda’s boys, Keenan (17) and Konley (14). Her grandsons were her whole world. She wanted to be the first person called to babysit, and watch them play multiple sports. Chris used her time off to watch her grandsons, or even dog sit, Bear (Sammi’s dog). She loved spending time with her five siblings and watching her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews in their activities as well. In her free time Chris enjoyed boating, camping and time with friends and family. Chris loved the freedom of riding scooters with the Wild Hags.

During her pregnancy with Miranda, Ed and Chris built their first house in Protivin, IA; where Ed still resides today. Ed and Chris had dogs all their life, but became parents to Kooper 7 years ago. This little pup became the most spoiled dog you have ever seen. Kooper has been Ed’s saving grace, and Chris’s bodyguard through this difficult time while on hospice the last 6 months.

Chris is survived by her loving husband Ed, her two daughters Miranda (Steve) Eisermann, and their children Keenan and Konley, and Sammi (Brian) Brower; sisters Jackie (Don) Lickteig, Lisa Hadacek; brothers Mark Henry, Jim (Nancy) Henry, and Phil Henry; sisters-in-law Sue (Jake) Jirak, Marilyn (Ken) Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Katherine, infant daughter Stephanie, and father and mother-in-law Francis and Blanche Vokaty.
