DEATH OF GEO. W. MARTIN.
DIED–Tuesday, April 18, 1893, GEO. W. MARTIN, of Marion township, in the eighty-fourth year of his age.
Geo. W. Martin was born November 25, 1809, in Fredericksburg, Lebanon Co., Pa. His parents, Frederick and Sarah (Wolf) Martin, were natives of Pennsylvania, but of English ancestry, and to them were born four children, Geo. W. being the youngest.
He remained under the paternal roof until he was twenty-one years of age, and during this time he attended the public schools, walking three and one-half miles both morning and evening.
In 1830 he wedded Miss Mary M. Pefley, a native of Lebanon County, Pa. Four children graced their union: Josiah, a resident of Philadelphia, Pa., Sarah A., wife of Jared Martin of Shamokin, Pa., William who resides near New London, Iowa, Rebecca wife of J. D. Howard, of this city. Mary M., the mother of these children died in 1842, in Pottsville. Pa.
On December 21, 1843, he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Bird, of Catawissa, Pa. By this union there were seven children: Emma, wife of Alvah T. Lindley, of this city, Gracilla, George A. of Blue Hill, Neb., Elliot F., of Havelock, Neb., Maggie, wife of Collins Lindley, of Bedford, Iowa, Charles H. of Plattsmouth Neb., Mary, wife of Robert Garard, of Hooper, Neb. Mrs. Eliza Martin died March 5, 1876. A few years later he married Mrs. Sabina Frame Ogg. By this union one child, Clifford, was born. All of Mr. Martin’s children survive him.
In 1854 he came to Henry County, purchased land and made his home in Marion township up to the time of his death. He has been a hard worker and all that he possessed has been made by his own industry.
Mr. Martin has always borne his part in every public enterprise, and by being honest and upright in all his undertakings, had the respect of all who knew him.
He became converted and united with the Methodist E. Church in early life and was an active, earnest christian.
His death was not unexpected, as he has been a sufferer of that dread disease, Bright’s, for several years.
He was buried at the Vernon Cemetery near Ebenezer Chapel, April 20, 1898. Rev. C. W. Powelson conducting the services.
