Missouri ValleyBonnie Beth (Meyer) Porter, age 90 of Missouri Valley passed away Friday, January 27, 2012 at Lakes Regional Health Care in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
Bonnie was born August 12, 1921 to Victor and Catharine Meyer in Oakland, Nebraska, and moved shortly thereafter to Missouri Valley, Iowa. Bonnie graduated as a leader and class officer from Missouri Valley High School in 1939, and married her loving husband Virgil Eugene Porter on September 20, 1943 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The couple lived in Missouri Valley and raised their three beautiful and accomplished children. Bonnie was a devoted wife and mother to Peggy, Sharon and Rick.
During World War II while Virgil was in flight training, Bonnie worked as a PBX operator at many military bases in the U.S. This led to a 33 year career as an operator and business manager at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was active in her community including the Business and Professional Women's Organization, past president of the Hospital Women's Auxiliary and life-long member of St. Patrick's Church. Bonnie socialized with a large circle of cherished friends and enjoyed various activities such as golfing, bowling, playing cards and creating jello salad masterpieces.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, and older brother Francis.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children: Peggy Hermann and husband Robin of Clive, Iowa; Sharon Arms of Spencer, Iowa; Rick and wife Julie Porter of Western Springs, Illinois; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many other nieces, nephews, and friends, including the residents at Illahee Hills in Urbandale, Iowa.
