Martha Eckhardt, age 96, of New Providence, IA, passed away on Friday, April 22, 2022, at the Hubbard Care Center.
Martha Agnes (Lischke) Eckhardt was born in Frankfurt, Germany on November 2nd, 1925. She was the youngest of Paul and Paula (Schlier) Lischke’s six children.
As a young woman in Germany, Martha played field hockey, rode her bicycle, worked on a farm, and helped her family.
In 1945, she married Herman Joseph Maria Eckhardt. They moved to the United States in 1953 with two sons and a daughter on the way. They first arrived in Moline, IL and later made a home in Davenport, IA. After they retired, Martha and Herman moved to New Providence, IA. Martha loved living in the countryside and lending her service and heart to her communities including: The New Providence Arts Center, The Honey Creek New Providence Friends Church, The Historic Honey Creek Friends Church, and The Friends of the Roundhouse, where she took great pride in helping beat dozens and dozens of eggs at the Round House Holiday Breakfasts.
She was both kind and tough, her presence heavy and light. She had a beautiful laugh and loved to sing. Martha left us on Earth Day, which is significant, as she was deeply connected to the earth and its children and plants and animals.
